Adopt a Project

These are one-time projects that need to be done.  Take a look and see if there is something you are interested in taking on!  You can also get involved by choosing to fund a particular project.

Volunteer Positions

Looking for something more?  These are volunteer positions that are critical to the functioning of various parts of our urban farm and ministry.  They usually require only a couple of hours a week.  This small commitment really makes a big difference!  We also have tasks that require help on an as-needed basis.

Ongoing

There are a few jobs that need constant attention, and are just as critical as anything else.  You can come work on one of these for an afternoon or only a few hours.  Whether it is getting some excercise chopping wood or getting out of the sun by tagging ollas in our workshop, these tasks are a satisfying and important part of what we do.

Tagging Ollas-  One of ECM’s micro-business is the production and sale of ollas (clay irrigation pots).  After the ollas are fired, they are stored in our warehouse.  Before they are sold, either to a nursery or shipped to an individual, they need to be tagged.  The tags, which provide the purchaser with information about ECM and ollas, are attached by raffia.

Chopping & Boxing Firewood-  In the winter we burn a wood in the fireplace in the office.  There are often logs that need to be split and stacked. We own a simple hand crank log splitter that is available for use.  We also receive a donation of various sizes of block wood that needs to be boxed and stacked.

Weeding (seasonal)-  In the summer and fall the beds and gardens of the urban farm need to be weeded.  Evasive Elm saplings also grow profusely up through our fences and other inconvenient places that need removing.

Labeling Honey & Tea (seasonal)- During late summer and fall, one of Growing Awareness’s micro-businesses includes processing and packaging honey and tea.  Both need to be appropriately labeled with product stickers before they can be sold.

Recycled Notebooks-  Paper that is blank on one side is collected for the pages of the notebook and cereal boxes, cracker boxes, and pop can boxes (etc.) are collected for the covers.  The paper and boxes are cut to the same size and set aside to be bound off site.  This provides one more avenue for paper to be used before it is recycled!

Wood Fetching (as needed)- We have various sources for the wood that is used either for making our rustic wood furniture or for heating our offices and workshops in the winter.  Periodically, we need help picking it up and bringing it here.
